| Summary |
Children have been learning about how teeth are related to diet and the importance of dental care. The visulaliser had a huge impact on the children’s understanding and enjoyment of the topic. |

About the Case Study |
| What is the project? |
Children should learn about how teeth are related to diet and the importance of dental care. |
Clearly state what you were trying to achieve. |
| Key objectives |
To know the names and functions of different teeth and that the shape of the teeth makes them useful for different purposes.
Recognise that some foods can be damaging to our teeth. |
|
Action |
| Actions taken |
Children used the Visualiser to look at close ups of their teeth. Children then recorded what they could see.
Teacher showed children teeth on Visualiser- incisor, canine, molar- described the teeth and match the function.- Why are the teeth suited to their function?- Visualiser was able to make the teeth bigger and children could make clearer comparisons.
To look at the impact of sugary foods on teeth, we carried out an experiment. Children suggested putting one tooth in coke and another in milk to see what happened.
Children made observational drawings of the teeth. The tooth in milk went shiny; the tooth in coke went black and shrunk in size.
The Visualiser made it easier to make the comparisons. |
Tell the story.
Describe how you planned and carried out the project.
Describe what you did in the classroom.
If collecting data describe the ways you collected data (e.g. questionnaires, observation, interview etc). |
| What did and didn’t work (Barriers and Enablers) |
Barriers
The USB connection came loose so that it would not link to the computer. We could not take photos or video footage as planned.
The Visualiser still worked through the Smart Board so we could continue with the case study by taking photographs on a digital camera.
Enablers John Sutton from Interactive Education came to demonstrate a lesson using the Visualiser. Support was given by support technicians from Shireland City Learning Centre where we had training for the whole school. |
Relate aspects of the project which did and didn’t work and possible causes.
This section should include a consideration of the barriers and enablers you encountered.
What were the difficulties that had to be overcome or that were not overcome?
What hindered progress?
What were the things that helped make practice successful? These could be:
Learner Issues Technical issues Staff training issues Management Issues |
Findings |
| Findings |
- Children enjoyed using the Visualiser
- Children achieve what they set out to achieve.
- Visualiser greatly supported the teaching of the topic.
- Good for showing children’s work.
- Improved comparison discussions.
- Supported up levelling in big write.
|
This could be as simple as a list of bullet points |
| Evidence of success |
- Children were more motivated and interested in lessons- the children would ask to use the Visualiser and look how the teeth had changed.
- The Visualiser supported the explanation of the functions of teeth- enlarged teeth to describe.
- Children’s attitude to Science changed- more enjoyment
- Lessons were of a faster pace- children got more work done
- Teacher’s confidence increased
- Children enjoyed using the Visualiser – evidenced through the comments collected
- Supported the learning outcomes well
|
Please indicate what sort of impact you have identified. This could be with regard to the following areas:
Learners e.g.;
- Better motivation of learners [how do you know?]
- More confident in use of e-learning and ICT
- Inclusion
- Assessment methodology
- Improvement understanding or attainment
- Change in capability,attitudes, behaviour
Learning environment e.g.;
- Faster paced lessons
- Improved learning environment [how do you know?]
- Ability to respond to different learning styles
Organisation e.g.;
- Increased employability
- Reviewing processes
- Influencing other departments
- Management, staff or system processes
Staff e.g.;
- Increased confidence of staff
- Staff development route maps, CPD or wider training model
- Adoption of technology in other classrooms
Describe the benefits. Consider:
Did it meet its objectives?
Impact on pupils
Impact on the community

Transferability and sustainability |
| Transferability and sustainability |
The Visualiser supported the children’s learning.
The Visualiser will be used in Year
The Visualiser will have impact on other subjects. |
Discuss and reflect
- Is your practice sustainable?
- How transferable are your findings and practices internally within the organisation?
- Could your findings and practices have an impact elsewhere and if so how?
- Could your practice be rolled out across different sectors?
|
| The future |
To further extend the development of the use of the visualiser it will be located in a Year 6 class with support from Nicola Baker to support the teaching and learning of their curriculum.
The Visualiser will be used in other year groups to support the curriculum. |
Is the project being developed or continued?
What changes are you planning? |
